LASER Skin Resurfacing laser

What is Mechanical or LASER Skin Resurfacing? laser resufacing

LASER skin resurfacing is a non-surgical procedure that involves the controlled abrasion (wearing away) of the upper layers of the skin with LASER. Nowadays, it has become common to use LASER (CO2 or Erbium: YAG laser), Crystal dermabrasion (Microdermabrasion) or Chemical peeling for dermabrasion or skin resurfacing.

The procedure may requires anesthesia. Afterward, the skin is very red and raw-looking, and it takes several weeks (3 to 6 months) for the skin to re-grow and heal.

LASER skin resurfacing helps to "refinish" the skin's top layers through a method of controlled non-surgical scraping. The treatments soften the surface irregularities, giving the skin a smoother youthful appearance.

LASER Skin Resurfacing is most often used to improve the look of scarred facial skin by accidents or previous surgery, or to smooth out fine facial wrinkles, such as those around the mouth. It's also sometimes used to remove the pre-cancerous growths called keratoses. It is commonly used to treat deep acne scars.

LASER skin resurfacing can be performed on small areas of skin or on the entire face. Friction can be used alone, or in conjunction with other procedures such as facelift, scar removal or revision, or chemical peel.

What Are The Benefits of LASER skin resurfacing?

- LASER skin resurfacing can improve Deep facial wrinkles and creases, Traumatic scar face, Post-burn Scars ...etc.
- A non-chemical approach may also be preferred for individuals with slightly darker skin, especially when treating limited areas of the face, since LASER skin resurfacing is less likely to produce extreme changes in skin color.
- By enhancing one’s appearance, it can also possibly give a boost to one’s self-confidence, but LASER skin resurfacing will not remove all scars and flaws or prevent aging.

Who is the ideal candidate for LASER skin resurfacing?

- Men and women of all ages, from young people to older adults, can benefit from LASER skin resurfacing. Although older people heal more slowly, more important factors are your skin type, coloring, and medical history. For example, black skin, Asian skin, and other dark complexions may become permanently discolored or blotchy after a skin-refinishing treatment.

- People who develop allergic rashes or other skin reactions, or who get frequent fever blisters or cold sores, may experience a flare-up. If you have freckles, they may disappear in the treated area.

- In addition, LASER skin resurfacing can not be done during the active stages of acne because of a greater risk of infection spread. The same may be true if you've had radiation treatments, a bad skin burn, or a previous chemical peel.

N.B. The LASER skin resurfacing procedure is forbidden for patients who use tretinoin or retinoid to treat acne, and they should stop use for 18 months at least prior to procedure.

How is LASER skin resurfacing Performed?

- LASER skin resurfacing are typically a quick non-surgical procedure, usually taking around 30 - 45 minutes to an hour, possibly longer, depending upon the treated areas.
- Pain is minimal because anesthesia is administered to the treated area. Or, in more severe cases, we may prefer to use general anesthesia, in which case you'll sleep through the procedure.
- It's not uncommon for the procedure to be performed more than once, or in stages, especially when scarring is deep or a large area of skin is involved.

- Then, the treated areas can be treated in a number of ways, including ointment, a wet or waxy dressing, dry treatment, or some combination of these.

What is after?

People who undergo LASER skin resurfacing can return to their normal daily routines within a day.

Right after the procedure, your skin will be quite red and swollen. You'll probably feel some tingling, burning, or aching; any pain you feel can be controlled with medications. The swelling will begin to subside in a few days to a week.

Then, your skin will become reddish as a new layer of tight, pink skin forms underneath. Your face may itch as new skin starts to grow, and you will use an ointment to make you more comfortable.

We will give you detailed instructions to care for your skin after procedure. For men, this will include delaying shaving for a while, then using an electric razor at first. It's very important that you understand the instructions and follow them exactly, to ensure the best possible healing.

If you notice the treated area beginning to get worse instead of better-for example, if it becomes increasingly red, raised, and itchy after it has started to heal-it may be a sign that abnormal scars are beginning to form. Call us as soon as possible, so that treatment can begin early.

N.B.:
- Above all, it's important to protect your skin from the sun until the pigment has completely returned to your skin, as long as six to twelve months.

- You can use sun block creams, but to get the most beneficial effect of LASER skin resurfacing, you should avoid sun, and keep your face out of chlorinated and sea water for at least four weeks.

Are There Any Risks to LASER skin resurfacing?

- LASER skin resurfacing procedures are normally safe when they're performed by a qualified, experienced doctor.

- The most common risk is a change in skin pigmentation and color. Permanent darkening of the skin usually caused by exposure to the sun without application of sun-block lotions in the days or months following surgery. On the other hand, some patients find the treated skin remains a little lighter or blotchy in appearance.

- You may also develop enlarged skin pores; these usually shrink to near normal size once the swelling has subsided. While infection and scarring are rare with skin-refinishing treatments, they are possible.

- Some individuals develop excessive scar tissue (keloid or hypertrophic scars); these are usually treated with the application or injection of medications to soften the scar.

How Long Will These Results Last?

Refinishing treatments can offer dramatic improvements in the surface of your skin, but it will take some time before you see the final results (3 -6 weeks).

When your new skin is fully re-pigmented, the color should closely match the surrounding skin. To keep these results for life, the result should be preserved using a tonic skin creams.

How Much Do LASER skin resurfacing Typically Cost?

Although price is a factor when deciding on surgery, the most important factor is that you feel you are getting a good quality, natural-looking result from the procedure.

LASER skin resurfacing costs are variable according to the deformity and the treated areas. Usually the cost is ranging from 2000 to 2500 U.S. dollars. When dealing with costs, you also need to take into consideration the fact that the procedure may need to be repeated. Most medical insurance providers do not cover the procedure.
